Auckland band Known Associates have dedicated the track Mercy on their debut album Penny Love to the woman who was murdered by ex-boyfriend Clayton Weatherston.

The band’s songwriter Warren Cate felt the impact of Elliott’s death when he attended a graduation ceremony in Dunedin in May 2008.

”The town hall was packed to the rafters, it’s a big university town,” Cate says.

”Suddenly the place went deathly quiet. People around me were crying and there was a two-minute silence, followed by the granting of a posthumous degree. I had no idea then who Sophie Elliott was, but it left a mark on me.”

At the ceremony, Sophie’s brother Chris accepted Sophie’s degree on her behalf.

”Then came the court case,” Cate says. ”It was made for TV stuff – the beautiful girl, the brutality, the farcical provocation defence, and all in good old, white, middle class New Zealand. But it was the images of Weatherston that haunted me, the total denial, the premeditated evil and delusion of the guy.

”Along with a large slice of New Zealand, I hated him. I thought about being in a country that had the death penalty.

”I fully accept the need for humanity and the justice system, but still, a part of me just wanted to take this guy out the back paddock and put a bullet in his head.

”Mercy is a song that grapples with those feelings and is dedicated to Sophie Elliot.”

Penny Love is out now via Amplifier and iTunes.
